Arthur Russell is one of those artists you don’t just casually like, if you’re into him then you’re REALLY into him. He died in 1992 of AIDS-related illness and was never fully recognized in his lifetime, but he has greatly influenced so many different genres of music, from experimental to electronic to folk. This song was my introduction to his music years ago. I remember a friend showing me his music and it was like a light bulb went off in my head as I realized that he is someone who so many of my favorite artists emulate. This is still probably my favorite Arthur Russell song although there are so many great ones. I find inspiration in the way Arthur kept creating new sounds, never playing it safe or doing the same thing twice, while staying completely true to himself. I hope that people who like my version of this song will go listen to his music.
